How we review and score products
Every product on AmericanSaverGuide goes through a structured 4-step evaluation. We apply the same process to every provider in a category โ no exceptions, no shortcuts based on commercial relationship.
Step 1: Identify the category leaders
We start by listing every meaningful provider in a given category based on:
- Market share data from state insurance department filings
- NAIC complaint reports
- Independent rating agency data (AM Best, Moody's, S&P)
- Better Business Bureau accreditation status and complaint patterns
- Reader interest signals from search data
Step 2: Gather quantitative data
For each provider, we collect:
- Pricing โ sample quotes across multiple ZIP codes, age brackets, risk profiles
- Coverage details โ policy limits, exclusions, deductibles, optional endorsements
- Discounts available โ multi-policy, loyalty, safe driver, paperless
- Service metrics โ claims response time, customer satisfaction (J.D. Power, NAIC)
- Financial strength โ credit ratings indicating ability to pay claims
- Geographic availability โ states served and coverage limitations
Step 3: Score on a weighted rubric
Every product is scored on a 10-point scale across the following dimensions:
- Cost & value (30%)
- Coverage breadth (25%)
- Customer service (20%)
- Financial strength (15%)
- Digital experience (10%)
Step 4: Apply real-world stress tests
- The actual quote and signup experience
- The fine print โ coverage caps, hidden exclusions, mandatory arbitration
- How they handle claims complaints
- How they treat existing customers vs. new ones
Update cadence
- At least every 6 months for active reviews
- Whenever a major policy or pricing change is announced
- Whenever readers report significant service issues we can verify
